Emma

There it is; my home. Mom’s car parked in the driveway. A snowman out front. Exactly like I expected to find it.

I never expected to land a sleigh on the roof, though.

The reindeer touch down with surprising agility, barely making a noise as we land. The rest of the street is empty, the lampposts lighting up nothing but snow.

“Are we going to go in through the chimney?” I whisper.

Nikolax can’t surprise a smile. “Of course not. Have you see big I am? I’d never fit.”

My cheeks are red and I feel dumb for suggesting it. “It’s hard to know what’s real and what’s not anymore,” I say. “Next thing I know, you’re going to tell me the Easter Bunny is real, too.”

“Oh, you mean Frank? Frank’s a good guy. Got an easier job too, he just has to schlep around some chocolate eggs instead of mountains of presents. Comes over once a year in the spring for brunch. Good guy.”

I cross my arms across my chest. “Please tell me you’re joking.”

“You’ll just have to stay with me until spring to find out now, won’t you?” Nikolax says, his alien eyes sparkling. “Grab my hand.”

He grabs my hand and without warning jumps down from the roof. I almost scream, but I can stop myself from waking up the whole neighborhood at the last moment. He lands down as if nothing happened, his boots barely sinking into the snow.

“How?!” I whisper.

Nikolax shrugs.

Just what are the Xera capable of?! To think there’s a whole species of them out there… if they had bad intentions, they could easily enslave humanity. And they’re not even the only alien species out there…

Luckily Nikolax is here to protect us. He opens the front door and we sneak in together, his boots not making a single peep as we head up the stairs. I do my best to ignore all of the Christmas decorations, like the massive tree that takes up half the living room. If I stop and think about how I wasn’t here to decorate the house with my little sister I might cry. And right now I’ve got to be strong.

I point out my sisters room to Nikolax. He slowly opens the door, and there she is; Anna, my little sis. She’s in her bed, sleeping peacefully. There’s stuffed toys covering every square inch of the room, it’s hard to even see her in there.

Anna is… pale. And thin.

Pain grips my heart like a vice. My adventures with Nikolax have proven to be a fantastic distraction, but this is my reality also. Perhaps that’s why I’m drawn to obeying him — it lifts the crushing weight off my shoulders. When he tells me what to do, I don’t have to worry, I don’t have to feel guilty, anxious, helpless.

I just have to obey.

Nikolax gently grabs Anna’s hand. It looks so small and dainty compared to his massive, blue paw. My mate closes his eyes, and a faint, shimmering blueness spreads through Anna’s body. A bit of color returns to her cheeks instantly.
